Born from the love of sun-free boundaries.
No Tan Lines Sanctuary was founded by a group of outdoor enthusiasts who shared one simple belief: the sun is for everyone, and tan lines are a choice — not a requirement.
We created NTL to give sunbathers, homeowners, and retreat operators a way to formally declare their space a liberated zone — and to build community around a lifestyle that prioritizes freedom, confidence, and wholeness under the open sky.

The No Tan Lines Sanctuary is built on a simple but sincere belief: that sunbathing freely is a joyful, natural, and worthy pursuit — and that doing it well requires community, responsibility, and a healthy respect for everyone sharing the sun with you. These guidelines exist not to restrict, but to ensure that every Sanctuary remains a place of warmth, welcome, and genuine freedom.

The Ten Sacred Rules of Sunbathing
ARTICLE I · OFFICIAL SANCTUARY RULES

The Sunscreen Commandment
Thou shalt apply sunscreen. Liberally. Repeatedly. A minimum of SPF 30 is required for all Sanctuary sessions. Members who burn are subject to gentle but pointed remarks.

The Tan Line Prevention Protocol
All garments, accessories, and adornments that may create tan lines shall be removed for the duration of sun exposure — including watches, rings, Fitbits, hats (on the head), and sticker name tags. Sunglasses are a medical exception and shall be rotated periodically.

The Rotation Rule
Members shall rotate their position relative to the sun no less than every 30 minutes to ensure uniform coverage. Failure to rotate is the leading cause of the dreaded "one dark arm" situation. Set a timer. This is non-negotiable.

The Hydration Decree
Every member shall consume adequate water during sun exposure. Dehydration is not glamorous. The NTL Commission has reviewed the evidence and concluded that water is, on balance, good.

The Shade Amnesty
Any member who says "I just need a few minutes in the shade" shall be granted shade without comment, judgment, or teasing. Overheating is not commitment — it is just hot.

The Phone Protocol
Mobile devices may be present, but members must lock their screens when setting the phone face-down on a towel. The Commission has no interest in screen-shaped tan line reports.

The Lotion Assistance Rule
Members may ask other members for assistance applying sunscreen to hard-to-reach areas. This request shall be honored graciously. Members shall not make it weird.

Practice Good Hygiene
Always use a personal towel when sitting or reclining on shared chairs, loungers, benches, or pool furniture. Shower before entering shared pools or hot tubs. Arrive clean and fragrance-considerate — heavy perfumes can be overpowering in close outdoor quarters. Keep personal items tidy and respect shared surfaces. A clean Sanctuary is a welcoming Sanctuary, and good hygiene is the foundation of a community built on trust and comfort.

The Guest Orientation Requirement
All first-time Sanctuary guests shall receive a brief orientation covering: sunscreen application, rotation schedules, and the location of the nearest bathroom. We are civilized people.

The Snack Doctrine
Snacks are not only permitted but encouraged. Cold grapes, watermelon, and anything in a cooler with ice shall be treated as essential equipment. Crackers are permitted only if crumb-free zones are respected.

ARTICLE II · TEN PRINCIPLES OF NTL ETHICS

Sunbathe Responsibly
The sun is powerful, skin is precious, and sunscreen is not a suggestion. The goal is a beautiful tan, not a cautionary tale.

Respect All Bodies
A Sanctuary is a place of radical acceptance. Members come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and levels of tan. No staring, comparing, or making anyone feel anything other than absolutely welcome.
III
Honor Privacy
What happens at the Sanctuary stays at the Sanctuary. No photographing, recording, or describing other members without their explicit consent. The only documentation you need is a journal entry about what a great afternoon you had.
IV
Practice Enthusiastic Consent
Always ensure that everyone present is fully comfortable with the Sanctuary environment, has agreed to its norms, and has been given a full opportunity to opt out without pressure or embarrassment.
V
Be a Gracious Host
Welcome guests warmly, offer sunscreen generously, explain the rotation schedule patiently, and ensure towels, chairs, shade, and cold drinks are available. A great Sanctuary is a hospitable Sanctuary.
VI
Do Not Judge Sunscreen Choices
Mineral or chemical. Spray or lotion. The only unacceptable sunscreen is no sunscreen. All responsible choices are welcome in the Sanctuary.

Maintain the Spirit
NTL is a lighthearted celebration of freedom, sunshine, and the genuine joy of not having weird tan lines. Approach membership with humor, warmth, and appropriate perspective. This is not that serious. And that is exactly the point.
VIII
Rotate. Always Rotate.
This is in the rules and in the ethics because it cannot be stressed enough. Every thirty minutes. Set a timer if you have to. This is the one hill the NTL Commission will die on.
IX
Spread the Mission
Tell friends, family, and interested strangers about the joys of NTL living. Do so with enthusiasm but not evangelism. Not everyone is ready. That is fine. The sun will still be there.
X
Never Arrive with Sock Lines
This is the floor. If you cannot commit to this baseline standard of tan line awareness, the organization cannot help you. We say this with love.

Violations & Discipline
ARTICLE III · THREE CATEGORIES OF GRAVITY
1
Minor Infraction
First-offense non-rotation, phone face-up tan lines, or forgetting to bring sunscreen (borrowing is allowed once).

Moderate Violation
Arriving in full clothing with no intention of adjusting, creating unnecessary tan lines through carelessness, or telling a new member that "the regular rules don't apply here."
3
Serious Offense
Privacy violations, non-consensual photography, deliberate disrespect for member boundaries, the use of abusive or disrespectful language toward any member or guest, or arriving at the Sanctuary in an incoherent or obnoxious state.
